Keith Mason of Harrison County retired from his machine shop several years ago, but his passion for restoration of all things mechanical never did. He and several of his friends have built and restored a Climax Class A locomotive, laid 3/4 of a mile of narrow gauge track, added a caboose, and a flat car for passengers. Every Wednesday since 1974, the Mason's fire up the boiler, shovel the coal, and offer guests a chance to ride back into history on a half hour round trip.

The Climax Class A locomotive was used in logging operations in West Virginia near the turn of the century, and is built for strength not speed. Using only old photographs as a guide, Keith and his railroad enthusiasts completed the engine in one year. The operation of the Locust Heights and Western Railroad is a family affair as well as a host of volunteers. There are certainly more famous excursion trains in West Virginia, but none operated by a more dedicated group of proud mountaineers. The ride is free, but donations are accepted.
