WVa power plant construction ahead of schedule

Construction of a coal-fired power plant near Morgantown is ahead of schedule and could be operational by fall 2010.

General manager Charles Huguenard says the Longview Power Plant is 56 percent complete, with a white smokestack visible from miles away.

Motorists heading north on Interstate 79 can see it towering beyond the West Virginia University Coliseum.

Environmentalists have long opposed the project, and some protest signs remain near the site.

Sierra Club spokesman Jim Kotcon said Monday his group remains concerned about the utility's plan to use water from the Monongahela River.

Longview originally planned to treat acid mine drainage from nearby underground mines, but Huguenard says that plan was abandoned because of water quality issues.
