Lou Ann Johnson is retiring after serving as Sen. Jay Rockefeller's state director for more than 20 years.

Rockefeller announced Johnson's retirement on Monday. Rockefeller says Deputy State Director Rochelle Goodwin will succeed Johnson.

Johnson began her government career in 1980 during Rockefeller's second term as governor. She worked as a planner for the Community Development Division of the Governor's Office of Economic and Community Development.

Johnson became a member of Rockefeller's Senate staff in 1985 and worked on economic development. She was named the senator's state director in 1987.
