WEST VIRGINIA NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online Weston cost-cutting continues with OT, heating January 07, 2009 3:56 PM WESTON, W.Va.
Things once considered basics for city employees in Weston are now long-gone luxuries. Opportunities for overtime in the street and police departments have been slashed, and firefighters gave up their Christmas bonuses. They're also burning firewood to keep their building warm as the city struggles to come up with $400,000 for unpaid bills. The shortfall, blamed on inadequate record-keeping, was discovered last month. Earlier this week, department heads outlined their cost-cutting tactics inside a chilly firehouse. City Council approved the $500 replacement of a broken police radio after Chief Roger Clem said citizens owe his department more than $100,000 in unpaid traffic and parking tickets. But a resolution to hire a payroll processor failed. |
