Former U.S. District Judge Robert J. Staker has died at age 83. Chapman's Mortuary in Huntington says Staker died Sunday at a nursing facility in Ohio after a short illness. Former President Jimmy Carter appointed Staker to the federal bench in 1979. He retired in 2005. Staker grew up in Kermit and received his law degree from West Virginia University in 1952. He worked as an attorney in Williamson, became Mingo County prosecuting attorney and later served as a Mingo County Circuit Court judge until 1979. West Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard called Staker a "giant" in a statement issued Monday and says he was a judge's judge. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday.
