Top spot should stay the same NEW YORK Unbeaten North Carolina remains the top team in the weekly Associated Press top-25 men's basketball poll. The 7-and-0 Tar Heels top Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Duke and Gonzaga in this week's poll. The poll is top heavy in schools from the Big East as a record eight schools from the conference are in this week's poll.
Texans entertain Jaguars HOUSTON This evening's NFL game is an AFC South contest featuring two teams clinging to the bottom of the division. It's not exactly the kind of contest ESPN had hoped for when the schedule was first released. The game involves the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars and it's being played in Houston. Each club enters the game with a record of four wins and seven defeats. In divisional play the Jags are 2 and 2 while the Texans are still looking for their first win of the season. Against AFC South opponents, the Texans are 0-and-4. This is one of those odd years for the Jags as they are playing better on the road than at home. In Jacksonville the Jags are 1-and-5 while on the road, they are 3-and-2. Houston's home/road records are the exact opposite. The two clubs met earlier this season with the Jaguars coming out on top of a 30-27 game. Josh Scobee of the Jags won the game in overtime with a 37-yard field goal.
Burress meets police NEW YORK Plaxico Burress of the New York Giants was led out of a police precinct in New York in handcuffs today after surrendering on a weapons possession charge. Authorities said that teammate Antonio Pierce is being investigated over his role in the accidental shooting at a Manhattan nightclub last Friday night in which Burress was injured. Burress was silent but held his head high as he was led out of the police station, where a crowd that included Giants fans hovered nearby with cell phone cameras. Burress' attorney says the wide-receiver had planned to plead not guilty to the charge during an afternoon court appearance. The episode set off a frenzy that shows no signs of letting up as police say the case could expand beyond Burress, with authorities investigating Pierce and whether the hospital failed to report the shooting. The NFL is closely monitoring the developments as well.
Pats to face Bucs LONDON The New England Patriots will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season in London's Wembley Stadium, the third straight year the NFL will stage a regular-season game in the British capital. The game will be played Oct. 25. The Bucs are giving up a game in Tampa and will be listed as the home team. Five weeks ago, the New Orleans Saints beat the San Diego Chargers 37-32 at Wembley. Last season, the New York Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins 13-10. Both games were sold out.
Surgery for Tech q-b LUBBOCK, Texas Officials at Texas Tech have confirmed that quarterback Graham Harrell has undergone surgery to repair nine breaks in two fingers of his non-throwing hand. Despite all that, he won't miss any playing time. Tech spokesman Chris Cook confirmed the surgery today. Surgeons inserted 17 pins and two plates into the pinkie and ring finger of Harrell's left hand. Harrell, a contender for the Heisman Trophy, will play when the No. 8 Red Raiders, who are 11-and-1), appear in their ninth straight bowl, likely the Cotton Bowl.
Kiffin introduced as Vols coach KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Lane Kiffin, the former coach of the NFL Oakland Raiders, is the new coach at Tennessee. He's the schools 21st coach, but only the third in the last 32 years. Kiffin was the youngest coach in the NFL's modern history when hired to lead the Oakland Raiders in January 2007 at age 31. He had been at Southern California the previous two seasons. Kiffen replaces Phillip Fulmer, who was forced out after 17 seasons as Vols coach.
Missouri to lose coordinator Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel confirms that offensive coordinator Dave Christensen will become the next head coach at Wyoming. Christensen brought in the spread offense that helped vault Missouri into national prominence. Pinkel confirmed the hiring on today's Big 12 conference call. Pinkel says Christensen will remain with the 19th-ranked Tigers through the Big 12 championship game Saturday against No. 3 Oklahoma and whatever bowl game they play in.
Tigers to retain coach COLUMBIA, S.C. A Clemson University official close to the school's football program says interim coach Dabo Swinney will become the Tigers' permanent coach. The official spoke on condition of anonymity today because an official announcement has yet to be made. Athletic director Terry Don Phillips was expected to introduce Swinney as head coach later in the day. Swinney took over as interim coach Oct. 13 when Tommy Bowden resigned. The Tigers won four of their final five games under Swinney to become bowl eligible. The clincher came Saturday when Clemson defeated rival South Carolina 31-14.
Two top teams from the East to meet There are just three NBA games on the agenda this evening and in one, two divisional leaders will square off. In Boston, the Celtics are facing Orlando in a contest featuring two of the top teams in the East. The Celtics top the Atlantic Division with a conference-best 16 wins and 2 defeats while the Magic, who lead the Southeast Division, are 13 and 4. Each club has won 9 of its last 10 game. The other four teams playing tonight all have losing records. The 4-and-11 Minnesota Timberwolves are in Charlotte against the 5-and-11 Bobcats while the 8-and-9 Miami Heat face the 5-and-12 Warriors at Golden State.
Five-game schedule tops the NHL dance card Five games comprise the NHL schedule this evening. In Buffalo, the Sabres are looking for their third straight home win with a game against Nashville. This is their first meeting of the season. Columbus and Vancouver are set to meet for the second time this season when the Canucks invade Columbus this evening. The Blue Jackets won the first encounter by the score of 4-2. Vancouver enters the game in first place in the Northwest Division by one point over Minnesota. Things could change in the standings however as the Wild are home tonight for a game with Colorado. Minnesota is coming off its best November ever with a franchise-record 8 wins. The Wild won the lone game between these two clubs this season, 3-1, back in early November. Defending NHL champion Detroit began the month of November on a hot streak but finished rather cold. They'll attempt to start December off with a win this evening with a home game against Anaheim. The Ducks have allowed just three goals in winning their last four contests. Anaheim beat the Wings in their lone meeting of the season, 5-4, on October 29th. The final game of the night has Los Angeles at home to Toronto. The Kings, who are opening a stretch of four games in six days, are looking for a third straight win. The Leafs, who have dropped five of their last six road games, are kicking off a three-game road trip.
