Ohio racing to begin after tracks, horsemen agree January 08, 2009 5:56 PM CINCINNATI Ohio's Thoroughbred tracks will be able to begin the 2009 racing season Saturday after the tracks and horsemen finally agreed on how to split off-track revenue.
Dave Basler, executive director of the Ohio Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, says the agreement gives horsemen about 20 percent more money. Ohio Racing Commission figures show that less money is being wagered at Ohio race tracks every year. The total amount of money handled was $372 million in 2007, compared with more than $600 million annually from 1997 through 2001. |
