Friday Night Football Extra
The Road to Wheeling

Mark Martin
When practices started in steamy August the dream of all West Virginia high school football teams was to play the first weekend of December. The "Super Six" weekend at Wheeling Island Stadium features the state's three championship games.

The Class AA showdown will again launch the championship event on Friday, December 5 at 7:30. The following day the Class AAA matchup unfolds at noon with the Class A title game later in the day at 7 p.m.

Who will be the six teams on the island in 2008? Eyewitness News keeps you updated daily with "The Road to Wheeling" series.

A field of 16 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs at the end of the regular season. The journey to Wheeling starts the weekend of November 14-15 with first round action. Eight games will be played in the three classes. The following weekend (November 21-22) four games in each class will be staged. Then, it's down to the final four Thanksgiving weekend (November 28-29) with the winners advancing to Wheeling.

November 10 "The Road to Wheeling" series begins on WCHS-TV and WVAH-TV. Mark Martin, Josh Lewis, Kennie Bass and A.J. Good will not only profile the progress of area teams and their hunt for a championship, but also programs from across the great state of West Virginia during the postseason's four-week stretch.

Week-by-week game matchups, team stories, interviews with coaches and player features will be included in "The Road to Wheeling" coverage each night at 6, 10 and 11 on Eyewitness News.
