BALTIMORE Jason Bartlett doubled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning and the Tampa Bay Rays took another step toward their first AL East title by beating the Baltimore Orioles 4-2. They have a two and a-half game lead over Boston in the AL East. The victory reduced the Rays' magic number for winning the division crown to four. Any combination of Rays wins and Red Sox losses totaling four would make the Rays champions of the AL East. Tampa Bay has already clinched a playoff spot for the first time in franchise history. The victory left the 93-and-62 Rays one win shy of tying the 1991 Atlanta Braves for most victories by a team that had the worst record in the majors one year earlier. Indians 4, Red Sox 3. BOSTON The Boston Red Sox will have to wait at least one more day to clinch their fifth postseason trip in six years. Rookie Zach Jackson pitched six solid innings and the Cleveland Indians beat Josh Beckett and the Red Sox 4-3. Beckett fell to 12-and-10. He struggled with his control, hitting a career-worst three batters, throwing a wild pitch and walking in a run. Boston had a chance to win in the ninth when Kevin Youkilis singled with two outs and took third on Jason Bay's double. But Jed Lowrie struck out on three pitches against Jensen Lewis, who got his 12th save in 13 opportunities. Royals 6, Tigers 2. DETROIT David DeJesus went 4-for-4 and Mike Aviles drove in two runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the reeling Detroit Tigers 6-2. The Tigers were minus suspended slugger Gary Sheffield, then lost star Miguel Cabrera in the third inning because of a tight back. Cabrera was listed as day-to-day. Detroit has lost 10 of 11, and is only one game ahead of last-place Kansas City in the AL Central. Athletics 4, Rangers 3, 11 innings. ARLINGTON, Texas Travis Buck hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 to move into second in the AL West. The Rangers lost their fifth straight game. They forced extra innings when Hank Blalock led off the ninth with a homer. Oakland's victory ensures both teams will finish with losing records. The Los Angeles Angels clinched the AL West division title Sept. 10th. Angels 2, Mariners 1. SEATTLE Ervin Santana and Francisco Rodriguez combined for a five-hitter, Vladimir Guerrero homered and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 to set a franchise record for road wins. Santana is 16-and-6. He allowed one run and five hits to match his career high for wins. He struck out nine, walked none and improved to 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA against Seattle this season. Rodriguez got three outs to extend his major league record for saves to 61 and earn his 10th against the Mariners this year.
Phillies 6, Braves 2. PHILADELPHIA Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer in the eighth and the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies beat Atlanta 6-2 for their 10th win in 11 games. The Phils lead the New York Mets by two and a-half games. The Phillies reduced their magic number for clinching their second straight division title to four after the New York Mets lost 9-5 to the Cubs. Philadelphia's magic number for clinching a playoff berth is three. Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer for the Braves, who helped the Phillies by winning two straight against the Mets over the weekend. The Phils are 14-and-2 against the Braves this season. Cubs 9, Mets 5. NEW YORK Jason Marquis became the second pitcher to hit a grand slam against the Mets this season and the Chicago Cubs clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs with a 9-5 victory that damaged New York's postseason chances. Struggling to avoid another late collapse, the Mets slipped 2 and a-half games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East and had their wild-card lead cut to one game over idle Milwaukee. Jon Niese lasted only three-plus innings in his third major league start and New York lost its third straight since moving into first place Friday with a win at Atlanta. He's 1-and-1. Marquis is 11-and-9. He drove in five runs and pitched effectively into the seventh. Diamondbacks 4, Cardinals 2. ST. LOUIS Brandon Webb won his 22nd game and Stephen Drew homered to help the Arizona Diamondbacks stay alive in the NL West with a 4-2 victory. Conor Jackson had two hits and an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won seven of eight and are two games behind the idle Dodgers with six games to go. Arizona has won three in a row on the road on the heels of a franchise-record 10-game road losing streak. Felipe Lopez and Cesar Izturis had three hits apiece for the Cardinals. They've lost 10 of 12 and are only four games above .500 for the first time since they were 24-20 on May 16. St. Louis' magic number is one to be eliminated from postseason contention. Reds 7, Marlins 4. CINCINNATI Joey Votto homered and doubled to help the Cincinnati Reds rally from a four-run deficit and beat the Florida Marlins 7-4 in a makeup game. |
