Last Update September 06, 2008 12:28 AM Indians RHP Westbrook undergoes hip surgery CLEVELAND Cleveland Indians starter Jake Westbrook underwent successful right hip arthroscopic surgery and will be on crutches for four weeks. Westbrook's hip first bothered him during spring training. He flew to Nashville, Tenn., for an examination on Thursday and Dr. Thomas Byrd performed the surgery there on Friday. The right-hander's season ended in June when he had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The Indians say the hip surgery is not expected to affect Westbrook's scheduled return to throwing off flat ground around Thanksgiving. Westbrook went 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA in five starts this season. He was sidelined early in the season for about a month with a strained oblique muscle, then felt pain in his elbow after his first start back in May. |
