Search abandoned for NJ baby's body, lost in trash

JERSEY CITY, N.J.
After nearly a week of sifting through dumps, New Jersey police say they are giving up the search for the remains of a baby thrown out with a Jersey City hospital's trash.



Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey says authorities came to the "harsh reality" that there is little chance they will find the baby's body.

Authorities had been digging through dumps in three states since the hospital discovered the body was not in the morgue Jan. 2.

Comey says he's afraid the body may have been incinerated.

The lawyer for the baby's mother says everyone involved "must be held accountable." He says a lawsuit is likely.

Authorities haven't said exactly how the mistake was made, but say it was the result of human error.
