Council asks airport chairman to resign
January 07, 2009 12:57 PM

Lexington's Urban County Council is asking Blue Grass Airport chairman Bernard Lovely to resign amid a financial probe.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported the council unanimously requested the resignation on Tuesday. Lovely has been the de facto head of the airport since executive director Michael Gobb was suspended Dec. 19 after his expenses were questioned.

State Auditor Crit Luallen's office is reviewing airport finances. Luallen said she has put law enforcement agencies "on notice" about the audit although no specific evidence of criminal activity has been found.

Luallen said auditors "are appalled" at the spending.

The newspaper has reported that Gobb spent more than $200,000 on travel and other expenses in just more than two years. It also reported three employees used $4,500 in airport money to fund a trip to a Texas strip club.
