Fumes, truck set off gas well explosion January 07, 2009 1:25 PM
HYDEN, Ky.
Officials say a passing truck set off fumes from a natural gas well and sparked a fire in southeastern Kentucky.
Leslie County Director of Emergency Management James Couch says the fire started at about 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Big Branch area of the county. Couch says firefighters doused the blaze by about 10 p.m.
Couch says one child who was in the truck and several workers near the well suffered minor injuries, but all were treated and released Tuesday night.
Couch says the initial explosion left trees and brush in the area singed and smoking.
Couch says a spark from the truck ignited vapors being released from the well. Because of the cloud cover, Couch says, the vapors couldn't evaporate, creating conditions for the blaze.
