At Christ United Methodist Church, the place former governor Cecil Underwood attended service for more than a decade, he is remembered by its pastor not as a former governor but as a family man.
"Cecil was a proud father and grandfather," Rev. Randy Flanagan said.
Underwood started attending Christ United during his second term in the governor's mansion. After leaving public office Underwood continued to attend services, in the past few years, as his health would allow.
"He was a very quiet man when he was here," Flanagan said. "He didn't want a lot of attention."
On Monday this church will be the place of a very public memorial service for Underwood, in sharp contrast with the quiet man who worshipped there. Flanagan hopes to convey to people what he saw of the former governor; a man with strong convictions who counted his family as one of his greatest accomplishments.
