With an unfriendly economy, the Salvation Army continues to take donations this holiday season, even though they realize everyone is tightening up their purse strings this year.
"It helps us to ensure that people get a food box for Christmas, and also toys for a lot of our kids," Captain Bob Mullins said. "We have 1,300 children that we're going to be supplying toys and clothing for."
And with every donation, they get closer to that goal. But with today's economy, the demand is growing, while donations are shrinking.
"We're already seeing an increase in the number of people that we assist," Mullins said. "And as far as donations, they're down about $3,000."
"The economy's really bad and people need it," Penny Preece said.
Preece says she understands times are rough, but it's the holiday season, and for her, giving is a high priority.
"We're a little bit better off than most," Preece said. "So why not help others out who are less fortunate."
And Capt. Mullins is quick to point out that it's the little gifts that end up making the biggest impact.
"People think it's the big dollars that make a difference," he said. "I promise you, it's the coins. It's the nickels and dimes and pennies that truly make a difference in the lives of someone else in the coming year."
Mullins says the Salvation Army is expecting around $100,000 this holiday season. That number is down from last year's $120,000.
