John Amos

A native of New Jersey, John Amos is best known for the role of James Evans in the classic sitcom "Good Times." His other notable roles include Gordy, the weatherman on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and Kunta Kinte on the legendary miniseries "Roots."

For five seasons he had a recurring guest starring role on the award-winning series "The West Wing" as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has also had guest starring roles in "Touched by an Angel," "704 Hauser," "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "Martin" and "In the House," with LL Cool J.

His movie credits include co-starring roles as Major Grant in "Die Hard 2: Die Harder," with Bruce Willis, and as the tough but honest head of the guard in Sylvester Stallone's "Lock Up." Amos was also featured as Denzel Washington's father in "Ricochet," and starred as Dutch, an ex-convict biker, in the 2005 independent feature film, "Voodoo Moon." Recently he completed "Dr. Dolittle 3," where he stars as a western rancher who teaches kids horseback riding, bulldogging and cowboy roping tricks.

In addition to acting, Amos has written for television, including "The Leslie Uggams Show" and the Emmy Award-winning "Lohman and Barkley Show."

Amos' range of talents extend to a passion for theater. He made his theatrical debut in the Los Angeles production of "Norman, Is That You?," for which he was nominated as Best Actor by the Los Angeles Drama Critics. He is also the former artistic director for the John Harms Theater in Englewood, New Jersey -- northern New Jersey's largest theater, designated "Regional Center of Artistic Excellence" from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

As a writer and artist, Amos conceived and wrote "Halley's Comet" in 1990, his critically acclaimed one-man show which opened at the American Stage Company to exceptional reviews and sold out houses. The show subsequently toured in over 480 cities throughout the United States and abroad.

When his acting career took off, Amos founded The John Amos Halley's Comet Foundation (www.thehalleyscometfoundation.org), a youth organization he created based on his previous career as a social worker in East Orange, New Jersey and the Bronx, New York. This innovative youth mentorship program is designed to motivate self-esteem and team work and to instill confidence and hope in children and their future.

Amos is also the driving force behind a mentorship program known as Kidsail for Success. Dressed like a pirate with a parrot sitting on his shoulder, "Cap'n John" (as the children call him) transforms his large yacht into a pirate ship, tells stories and teaches them about sailing.

Recently Amos set out on a 1500-mile ride from Los Angeles to La Paz, Mexico, on a motorcycle to promote his work with the Foundation. He referred to the experience as "mind blowing and mind clearing. Fifteen hundred miles riding on a Hog straight in to Mexico... If it doesn't kill you, it will make you strong."
