General Hospital Weekdays at 3:00 PM on WCHS-TV8
"General Hospital," the innovative, award-winning drama series, celebrated 10,000 episodes on April 17, 2002. The episode was directed by Emmy Award-winning "General Hospital" director Joe Behar, who directed the pilot episode 39 years ago.Since 1979 "General Hospital" has been the longest-running daytime drama produced on the West Coast, and inspired "Port Charles," the spin-off series that premiered in June, 1997. "General Hospital" is the longest-running dramatic serial on the ABC Television Network. In May of 2000 "General Hospital" made Daytime Emmy history as the only daytime drama to ever receive the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama series a record seven times, marking the show's fifth win in six years (1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999). It had also garnered the Emmy Award as Outstanding Daytime Drama Series in 1980-81 and 1983-84. In 1993 Anna Lee (Lila Quartermaine) and the late John Beradino (Dr. Steve Hardy) received stars on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame for their work on "General Hospital." In the 40th Anniversary Special Edition of TV Guide, "General Hospital" was hailed as the "All-Time Best Daytime Soap." In March of 2000 "General Hospital" received the Favorite Daytime Serial award on the nationally broadcast Soap Opera Digest Awards, for the fourth consecutive year. In addition "General Hospital" has won the Directors Guild Award and the Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement. The "General Hospital" tradition of passion, intrigue and adventure takes place in the fictional town of Port Charles, set in upstate New York. The glamour and excitement of new characters who have come to find their destinies in this familiar seaport town intertwine with the lives, loves and fortunes of beloved, well-known faces. And, as always, love and danger abound, as "General Hospital" continues into the new millennium with contemporary storylines and unforgettable characters. The families of Port Charles bring style and substance to "General Hospital." The mighty Quartermaines are more involved than ever in affairs of the heart, and in the intricate business affairs of the community. Steel-handed Edward (John Ingle) and his gracious wife, Lila (Anna Lee), preside over family interests. Alan (Stuart Damon) and Monica (Leslie Charleson) are once again faced with tumultuous times, as their daughter Emily leaves town to recover from a near-fatal accident after falling for the rough-around-the-edges Zander Smith (Chad Brannon). AJ's (Billy Warlock) self-destructive behavior after losing Carly (Sarah Brown) to Port Charles crime lord Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) creates an alliance with the newest addition to the Quartermaine clan -- sister Skye (Robin Christopher), as he sets his sights on getting custody of his son Michael. Grandson Ned Ashton (Wallace Kurth) continues to be torn between family loyalty and the object of his affection -- Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn), but their differing lifestyles will prove to be a challenge. The return of the gregarious and devilishly handsome Jax brings him close to the friends he once had in Alexis and Ned, and his connection to Port Charles newcomer Kristina will come as a surprise to many. The next generation of Spencer, Cassadine and Webber have made themselves known in this small seaside town, as Lucky Spencer (Jacob Young), Nikolas Cassadine (Coltin Scott) and Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) join Port Charles newcomer Gia Campbell (Marisa Ramirez) on an adventure that far surpasses mere teen angst. Elizabeth and Lucky try to find bliss in an otherwise tormented life, while Lucky's half-brother, Nikolas, must choose between his love for Gia and his love for his brother. The most endearing love story of all time continues to be put to the test, as Luke and Laura Spencer (Anthony Geary and Genie Francis) sign their divorce papers and face truth and consequence as never before. Laura's renewed connection with Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner), her first love, will complicate matters. At the same time, the Spencer and Cassadine feud reaches new levels with the return of presumed-dead Stavros (Robert Kelker-Kelly). Felicia Scorpio-Jones struggles with her feelings for Luke, as her ex-husband, Mac Scorpio, vows to win back her love. Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman) and Roy DiLucca's (A Martinez) love for each other does not prevail, as Roy's ex-girlfirend, Melissa Bedford (Jensen Buchanan), recently arrived in Port Charles and proves that their connection is still quite powerful. Bobbie and Carly continue to grow closer, but their tempestuous mother-daughter relationship sometimes places them at odds. Carly (Sarah Brown) and Sonny Corinthos' (Maurice Benard) tumultuous relationship reaches new levels, as Carly must make Sonny learn to trust her once again. In the past several years "General Hospital" has been praised by national organizations for elevating the public awareness of several important social issues. "General Hospital" received the Susan G. Komen Foundation Media Award in 1995 for the story of Monica's experience with breast cancer. It has received three SHINE awards (formerly the Nancy Susan Reynolds Award) for the program's continued contribution to the awareness of sexual responsibility. The Ryan White Foundation presented its 1996 Ryan's Angels Award to "General Hospital" for the moving and thorough examination of HIV/AIDS through the characters of Robin and Stone, and the show was recently honored by the American Red Cross for its HIV/AIDS-related storylines. In addition several other prestigious awards have been bestowed on it for confronting sexual child abuse, organ donation and other social issues. "General Hospital" was created by Frank and Doris Hursley. Jill Farren Phelps is the executive producer. Megan McTavish is head writer. Carol Scott and Mary O'Leary are producers. "General Hospital" airs Monday-Friday, 3:00-4:00 p.m., on WCHS-TV8. Need to write? |
